Jaime Pressly Happy to Go From Villain to Victim on I Hate My Teenage Daughter

Jaime Pressly Who's the dummy now? She spent years regularly hurling insults on My Name is Earl, but for Jaime Pressly's return to TV, the tables have turned. "In order for me to come back to TV - being that Earl is still on [in reruns] and that Joy was such a strong character - I have to be able to play something that was completely opposite of her," Pressly told reporters on a conference call last week for her new series I Hate My Teenage Daughter. "And this character is definitely that." Check out photos from I Hate My Teenage Daughter On the Fox sitcom, premiering Wednesday at 9:30/8:30c on Fox, Pressly is now the one being bullied as a single mother who begins to realize her spoiled teenage daughter is morphing into the type of girl that made her life hell in high school. While Earl's Joy was known for her high hair, big ego and even bigger mouth, Pressly describes her new character Annie as "grounded" and "a bit of a dork." "It's been incredible to be allowed to play a character against type. In this business, you can be pigeon-holed very easily," she said. "If people see that you're good at doing something, they either assume that that's all you can do, or they assume, 'Oh, that's just who she is.'" Pressly has found inspiration this time from being a mother herself. "I am a single mom, so in reading it, I loved the relationship between myself and Katie [Finneran]'s character, because, honestly if it wasn't for my best friends, I don't know how I would have gotten through all these tough times," she said. "You just do your best to deal with every situation and when you have a best friend with you to help you deal with it, it just makes things that much easier." Mark Consuelos joining I Hate My Teenage Daughter Her own son, four-year-old Dezi, has a long way to go before hitting puberty, but Pressly sympathizes with her on-screen alter-ego."It's hard raising a teenager. They are in hormone hell. They think they know everything," she said. "It's not a mean-spirited show, but it is something that goes on. Quite frankly, the daughters bully their moms more than anybody." Although she says the show itself isn't mean-spirited in nature, Pressly embraces the sitcom's harsh title for its honesty about the parent-child bond. "Whether it's upsetting them, or they like it and agree with it, its grabbing people's attention and that was the point of it in the first place," she said. "We're just saying it for you, because it's a moment that every parent has actually had where they just want to say, 'Oh, my God, I hate my teenager,' but you don't really. Just, on occasion, they can do things that make you want to want crawl into a fetal position." Will you watch I Hate My Teenage Daughter?

Watercooler: Once Upon a Time Enchants Once Again

Raphael Sbarge, Lana Parrilla OK, so Walt Disney is either rolling in his grave or LOLing from the beyond. Hopefully it's the latter, because Once Upon a Time is such a hoot. It would be a shame to think the man behind the Mouse wouldn't be down with the fun being had over in Storybrooke. As the season's top new drama, the delightful series has been delivering big-time numbers and smiles galore, with its fractured take on fairy tales, cheeky tweaks to classic characters, and rapid-fire nods to Disney staples and other out-there realms. A Dalmatian named Pongo? Love! And the Apollo candy bar from Lost? Love more!Last night, Once served up yet another enchanting episode, this time devoted to the fairy-tale backstory of Henry's therapist Archie Hopper, better known in old-school circles as Jiminy Cricket. It was an inspired outing that presented both the cartoonish con-artist version and Storybrooke's shrink edition as conscientious good guys stuck under the thumb of bad people. And while we could spend hours and hours in the Evil Queen's kingdom, the evolving mythology in the modern-age plot is making that timeline the one to watch...very closely. What is up with those tunnels running under that town? Who is Henry's dad? And if you didn't get chills when a certain iconic umbrella saved the day during the climactic mine-collapse rescue, what is wrong with you?!So are you loving Once Upon a Time, too?Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

UFC Sues to Overturn New York Ban on Live Mixed Martial Arts

Jason Merritt/Getty Is fighting a constitutionally-protected form of expression?our editor recommendsUFC on Fox: What the Media Is Saying Yes, says the owner of Ultimate Fighting Championship, which today filed a lawsuit against NY officials intent on upholding a 14-year-old ban against the live exhibition of mixed martial arts.Zuffa, UFC's majority owner, is now intent on ending this ban, delivering its legal punch just days after Fox became the first broadcast network to show a live UFC event. Zuffa announced the filing of the lawsuit with a flourish this morning on its Twitter feed. "Good morning, NY," said the tweet, delivered just hours after NYC police had cleared out Zuccotti Park, sparking outcries from Occupy Wall Street protesters. As city officials fought one developing First Amendment battle, they were hit with another in the form of a lawsuit that puts forward the idea that banning live professional MMA is a patent violation of the U.S. Constitution. According to the complaint: "A live professional MMA event is both sport and theater. Fighters express themselves in every aspect of the live performance -- from the entrances they stage and the walkout music they select, to the clothes they wear, to the way they conduct themselves inside the arena and towards their opponent. Fans come not just for the fights, but also for this entire unified show." The 123-page complaint gives the full history of MMA and breaks down the rules. It posits the idea that MMA is safer than many other sporting events and gives full descriptions of various fighters' stories. From a legal point of view, though, its most interesting aspect might be the idea that a recent Supreme Court decision (Brown v. Entm't Merchants Ass'n) that overturned a California ban on violent video games to minors may have rendered NY's ban untenable. In that decision, the Supreme Court found that video games communicate social messages and that legislatures are prohibited by the constitution from creating "new categories of unprotected speech simply by weighing the value of a particular category against its social costs and then punishing it if it fails the test." Zuffa has taken the high court's message to heart, crafting a lawsuit that puts this issue front and center. The plaintiffs say that the NY ban can no longer be "justified based on antipathy to MMA's supposedly 'violent' message." Interestingly, Zuffa also says that if the NY ban is "read literally," it could apply to media broadcasts and coverage of professional MMA. On Saturday night, Fox broadcast the network debut of UFC to national audiences, including those in NY. The network wasn't scared by possible criminal action and indeed got rewarded. The show pulled in an audience of 5.7 million people, which topped any college football game this season except for one (Alabama-LSU) in the 18-34 demographic. War of the Dead

A Little Film Co., Rialto Intl., Lithuanian Film Studios and Media One Entertainment production. (International sales: Accelerator, Studio City.) Produced by Barr Potter, Ramunas Skikas. Executive producers, Alessandro Fracassi, Robbie Little. Co-producer, Marko Makilaakso, Joel Soisson. Directed by Marko Makilaakso. Screenplay, Makilaakso, Barr B. Potter, from a story by Makilaakso. With: Andrew Tiernan, Mikko Leppilampi, Samuel Vauramo, Juoko Ahola, Jouko Ahola, Mark Wingett, Andreas Wilson, Antti Reini, Magdalena Gorska. (English dialogue)Finally premiering more than four years after principal photography wrapped, "War of the Dead" arrived in time to play Toronto's After Dark fest alongside "Exit Humanity," another movie placing zombie action in a wartime historical context. The slicker and more expensive of the two, Finn helmer Marko Makilaakso's English-language, Lithuania-shot bigscreen debut is muscular if a little one-dimensional, without much human interest or scariness to flavor what's basically one long military shootout. Taken as a straightforward actioner, it's diverting if unmemorable, with solid prospects for homevid sales in most territories. Theatrical exposure will be spotty. Prologue reveals Nazi "anti-death" medical experiments performed on captured Russian soldiers early during WWII. Two years later, in 1941, allied Finn and American forces are on a mission to seize an enemy bunker on the Finnish-Soviet border. First they are decimated by a Russian ambush (before the U.S.S.R. switched from its tenuous Axis association to committed Allied allegiance); then survivors are further reduced by an attack from the undead, flesh-hungry victims of those experiments. By the half-hour point, only Yank officer Stone (Andrew Tiernan), Finn Laasko (Mikko Leppilampi) and Russian grunt Kolya (Samuel Vauramo) remain to battle the nonstop onslaught. Much machine gunning ensues, en route to and inside the abandoned secret Nazi project's underground HQ. Protags' trigger-happy offensive against scores of uniformed zombies (despite the undead's superior speed, strength and resilience) makes the pic feel more like a "Rambo" movie than like a horror meller. It certainly doesn't have much in the way of atmosphere, dread or "boo!" moments, despite the polished if undistinctive visuals and score. The testosterone-laden proceedings don't give the competent thesps much opportunity to develop character, and the script (co-written by Makilaakso with veteran producer Barr Potter) leaves the basic premise undeveloped beyond something on which to hang a series of busy but interchangeable action sequences; simply put, more plot would have helped. Fadeout suggests a desire to set up "War of the Dead" as first in an ongoing horror-combat action series a la "Underworld." Packaging-wise at least, the end product shows no sign of the numerous production woes the pic purportedly endured, including late changes of cast and funding.Camera (color), Hannu-Pekka Vitikainen; editor, Michael J.
